ADVENT SONG

Throughout the world ring advent songs to praise
The son of god. The seers proclaim their prince
Of peace, confirmed divine by senate vote.

Whispers of sedition trouble Salem,
Where Idumean sits pretentiously
In David’s seat. Rejected Esau laughs
And sips the soup that Jacob tricked him with.

A priest caught scoffing at the Word of God
Now mouths his prayers in silent punishment
Until his barren bride shows forth the voice
That from the lifeless wasteland cries: Prepare!

A pregnant virgin—screaming now with pains
That come more frequently and strong—curls up
Amongst the stable-hay, while smelly maws
Explore her hair all mixed within their food.
Her husband, watching helplessly, cannot
But think the scene’s all wrong…

Indeed, all wrong;
Yet that which fell apart shall be restored.
