ABACUS
History has been cruel to us
And hence changed our geography.
The new and old economy abandoned us
The market plays a different tune and we are not able to sing
The tunes of theirs,
For we have been singing the songs with birds,
Trees, mountains….
Now, in drawing, you have been teaching us to live with
Concrete trees, chemical water, coloured our lives with smoke…
Oh! In science, you searched Graphite and phosphate mountain
At our home, in our fields
Thanks, your palaeontology preserved our ancestors’ bones as primates
Physics teaches about the movement of mountains, rivers and villages
Living with trees, birds, animals…. was our motto,
But your sociology gave us a different model
It has changed our psychology and physiology
We ask, how can we leave the river….
Zoology taught us to dissect our hearts and feelings
The chameleon reminds us of you
Literature has flown off birds and the fragrance of flowers
Calculation has been beyond our reach, we were happy with the little
Your games have tricked our land.
Welcoming death and opening refugee camps in the west
Politics has taught us that we should move from this place
New leap teaches us how easy to uproot roots.
Oh! Please don’t teach Love, for you destroy what you Love
Oxygen is less and carbon statistics have enveloped our
Forests, our parents, are crying
Language doesn’t die on its own it’s like the extinction of Dodo
My bad. My apologies for my ignorance and babbling…
We respect you, as our ancestors taught us,
Their philosophy was of harmony
