A saint whose story begins
in receiving news and rumor mixed,
in confusion, fear, and betrayal;
I have known these things,
but I am not yet a saint.

Do not fear to take this woman
as wife, the angel said.
Do not fear, do not fear, do not fear.
He kept his mouth shut and obeyed;
My faith is not that strong.

I wish to be a protector,
a loving father to children mine by grace.
If only I had dreams and angels
to guide me on my way,
then the saints may be closer.

But I would gladly settle for
a still small voice speaking
irrevocably into my ear:
do not fear.
